History of
Tyrone School
Dawson, Pennsylvania
Below is a timeline of the History of Tyrone School. A lot of the information provided comes from recorded deeds at the Fayette County Courthouse while other information was provided to the Church in writing from an attorney’s research into the property in 1998 when the building was being donated to the Church.
Ongoing research is taking place to compile a more complete history of the Schoolhouse from 1873-1949 when it was in use as a School.

Owned by Tyrone Church
July 2nd, 1998
James Brown and his wife, Beverly Brown, donated the Schoolhouse and property to Tyrone United Presbyterian Church, Inc. (NKA Tyrone Presbyterian Church, Inc.) for its continued preservation and restoration, but more importantly to continue on the legacy of this building as a community building where education activities can be carried out through the Church. The Church has been proud to be a part of this Schoolhouse’s history. It also holds sentimental value to us being that a number of our active members, as of July 2, 2023, attended school here as a kid.

Project Updates
The schoolhouse, being 150+ years old, was experiencing structural cracking, settling, and significant mortar loss which was putting this building at risk. All of these issues have been resolved, but there is still more to do! Our goal for 2025 is to replace the wood siding on the rear of the school. We are still accepting donations to help fund this project as funding is needed to purchase the materials for the siding replacement.
In 2025, we replaced the last of the six windows and wrapped up the masonry restoration.
In 2024, we have had our honeybees extracted from the chimney and got the chimney removed from the schoolhouse. The cornerstone on the building has been engraved donated by Davis Monument “TYRONE SCHOOL”. A new chimney has been installed, and our old metal roof has been replaced. The electric service to the building has also been upgraded and buried.
In 2023, we installed the gutters, downspouts, installed two of the three windows on the church side, painted the oil tank, removed part of the broken sidewalk, and the weather side of the building has been cleaned, bricks restored, and repointed.
In 2022, we installed three new windows on the schoolhouse.
